How to do deep work without checking your phone

Updated September 13, 2026 · By the Stint team

Short answer

Deep work without phone checks needs three things: a fixed session with a clear end, apps that are shielded rather than merely silenced, and a reason to finish that exists outside your own mood. Notifications off is not enough; the phone is the habit, not the alert. Start a session before you begin, block the apps that pull you in, and put something on the line for finishing. Stint packages all three: a timed session, Screen Time shields on your chosen apps, and a focus pool where everyone who qualifies splits the prize pool.

Stint counts only uninterrupted time in your work apps, so a phone check ends the session, not your streak of excuses.

Why "just put the phone in another room" fails

It works for a day. Then the phone comes back because you need two-factor codes, or a message from your team, or music. The advice treats the phone as the problem when the phone is where the work also lives for many of us.

The better frame: the phone is fine, specific apps are not. Block those during work, keep everything else, and stop fighting the whole device.

Sessions beat intentions

A session is a container: a start, a length, and a rule for what counts. In Stint, focus time accrues only while you are inside the work apps you chose. Switch to anything off-plan and the session ends. This sounds strict, and it is, on purpose. It removes the grey zone where "just checking one thing" lives.

The Live Activity on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island shows the remaining time, so you never need to unlock the phone to see how you are doing. When the session ends, it disappears on its own.

Add a reason to finish that is not motivation

Motivation is a weather system. A pool is a contract. When you join a Stint pool you pay an entry fee and commit, along with a handful of other people, to a daily focus goal for the length of the challenge. Everyone who meets it qualifies and splits the prize pool. Miss it and you do not qualify; you are never charged anything further.

The number that matters is small. Even a modest entry fee is enough to make you start the session on a low-energy Tuesday, and starting is most of the battle.

A deep work session, step by step

  • Write the one thing you will finish this session. One sentence.
  • Open your work app first, then start the Stint session from the app or the Live Activity.
  • Work until the countdown ends. If you finish early, use the remainder to review, not to browse.
  • When the session ends, note what you finished. Two lines in any notes app.
  • Repeat daily until the challenge settles. Then join the next pool.

Questions people ask

Can I listen to music during a session?

Yes, as long as the music app is not on your block list. Only the apps you chose to block are shielded.

What counts as focus time?

Time inside the work apps you selected for the challenge. Time in any other app does not count, and opening a blocked app ends the session.

Focus with money on the line.
