Why every focus app stops working after three weeks

Focus apps fade because they run on friction, and you adapt to friction. A pause becomes a reflex, a dead tree stops hurting, a wait becomes a wait. By week three the intervention is background noise. Stakes do not fade, because they are not a feeling: every session in Stint has a share of a prize pool behind it, and that number is the same on day thirty as on day one.

A prize pool does not get less real the more you look at it.

At first it worked pretty well, but over time I felt like it became less and less effective.

The same review, with the app name changed, sits under every focus app on the store. The mechanism is habituation. Anything that works by making you feel something (guilt, calm, delay) stops working when the feeling wears in.

The last row is the whole argument. A consequence with a number on it does not habituate, because it is not a sensation. It is a fact about your bank balance next week.

A stake you set alone can be quietly cancelled alone. A pool cannot. Five people paid in, five people committed to the same daily goal, and the pool chat can see who kept it. On the day you do not feel like it, that is what gets the session started.

You join a pool: a small group, same daily focus goal, same number of days. Everyone pays an entry fee into a shared prize pool.

When you start a session, the apps you chose are shielded through Screen Time. Focus time counts only inside the work apps you picked. Open a blocked app and the session ends.

Meet the goal every day and you qualify. Everyone who qualifies splits the pool. Miss it and you forfeit your share. Nothing else is ever charged.

Questionspeopleask

Does Stint have streaks too?

Yes, but they are not the consequence. A broken streak in Stint means you did not qualify for that pool; the share you forfeit is the thing that holds.

What if I finish one challenge and stop?

That is the gap where habits die, so the app makes the next pool one tap away. Most people run back-to-back one or two week pools.
